Offences Relating to Marriage

Modernizing Matrimonial Law:

The BNS has significantly updated family-related penal laws. Most notably, IPC 497 (Adultery) has been omitted entirely following Supreme Court mandates. However, a new Section 69 now criminalizes sexual intercourse through deceitful means or a false promise of marriage. Cruelty (498A) remains a major focus under BNS 85.

IPC 494 → BNS 82 Bigamy (Marrying again during lifetime) IPC 495 → BNS 82(2) Bigamy with concealment of former marriage IPC 496 → BNS 83 Marriage ceremony gone through fraudulently IPC 498A → BNS 85 Cruelty by Husband or Relatives NEW → BNS 69 Intercourse on False Promise of Marriage IPC 493 → BNS 81 Cohabitation caused by deceitful belief IPC 497 → OMITTED Adultery (No longer a criminal offence) IPC 498 → BNS 84 Enticing a married woman (Updated)
